Being in the present moment allows us to feel in control of our response to a trigger which can be a person/situation or event. Focussing on our surroundings can help us on how we experience it, you are distracting yourself from overwhelming emotions that will cause you to spiral into other thoughts.
The 5 senses grounding technique, is also known as 5-4-3-2-1 which involves looking at the details of your surroundings involving all your 5 senses.
